Core activity

(+) Checking bearing play of rear wheel

(-) Checking bearing play of rear wheel

Precondition

Motorcycle standing firmly on centre stand or auxiliary stand.

Note

The load must be taken off the rear wheel for the procedure described below. Do not use a rear-wheel stand.

Press the brake caliper against the brake disc.

The brake pistons are pushed back.

Test

Rock the rear wheel over the axle at various points around its circumference.

Result: Play is perceptible.

Measuring bearing play of rear wheel

Remove screw (1).

Install dial-gauge holder (No. 36 3 609) in the mount for the brake caliper.

Install dial gauge (No. 00 2 510) in the dial-gauge holder and align it such that the dial-gauge probe is slightly preloaded and touching the horn of the rim.

Test

Set dial gauge (No. 00 2 510) to "0".

Using both hands, rock the rear wheel over its axle and check the readings on the dial gauge. The measuring point must be on the imagined line through "top hand", "centre of axle" and "bottom hand".

The sum of the positive and negative dial-gauge readings is the rear-wheel bearing play.

Turn the rear wheel so that this measurement is performed at various points around the circumference.

Warning

Braking efficiency is impaired if the brake pads are not correctly bedded against the discs.

Before riding off, always check that the brakes bite as soon as the brake lever is pulled or the brake pedal depressed.

Operate the brake several times until the brake pads are bedded.
